Standing with Israel,
Promoting Peace

People in front of destroyed building.

As 2024 dawned, the trauma of October 7th still lingered, a poignant reminder of our sacred obligation to stand in solidarity with our Israeli siblings. We bore witness to the shattering impact of war on Israeli families and communities, and we lifted our voices to honor the memories of those silenced by violence. With hearts heavy with grief and minds resolute with purpose, we advocated tirelessly for the return of the hostages and a ceasefire that would bring an end to the bloodshed, ushering in a new era of peace and possibility for Israelis and Palestinians alike. Together, we transformed sorrow into action, despair into hope, and isolation into solidarity.

Screams Before Silence

While much of the world turned a blind eye to the sexual violence against women committed in Israel on October 7th, we took action to raise awareness about the devastating effects of gender-based violence. Partnering with Women of Reform Judaism, the National Council of Jewish Women, and filmmaker Sheryl Sandberg, we brought the powerful documentary Screams Before Silence to communities across North America. By providing a comprehensive community screening toolkit and discussion guide, we empowered leaders to facilitate critical conversations and bear witness to the atrocities committed. This initiative helped raise awareness about the gender-based violence perpetrated by Hamas, demanding justice and accountability for the crimes against humanity.

October 7th Aftermath and Anniversary

On the first anniversary of October 7th, North American Reform Jews stood in solidarity with our Israeli siblings, offering support and comfort as we bore witness to victims of the past year and advocated for the release of those still in captivity. On Simchat Torah, the Hebrew anniversary of October 7th, Rabbi Rick Jacobs shared a message with Reform Jews about finding strength in resilience while honoring the memories of those who had been massacred, emphasizing the importance of community, solidarity, and the pursuit of peace.

In the wake of the October 7th Hamas attacks and amid the ongoing war, the URJ continued to raise its moral voice. Throughout 2024, we mobilized our Movement to advocate for the return of hostages, the protection of innocent lives, and a just resolution to the conflict — grounded in our Jewish values of dignity, justice, and peace.

  • Demanded the immediate and unconditional return of Israeli hostages, including through public campaigns, vigils, and op-eds, as well as direct advocacy with U.S. government officials and Israeli leadership. Twice in 2024, Rabbi Rick Jacobs met with U.S. and Israeli leaders to advocate for the hostages’ release and elevate the voices of hostage families.
  • Called for increased humanitarian aid into Gaza in accordance with Jewish ethics and international law. The URJ issued multiple public statements urging the Israeli government to allow sustained aid flows and opposing the starvation of civilians as a tool of war.
  • Continued to speak out against rising antisemitism and polarization while standing firmly for a pluralistic and democratic Israel. Rabbi Jacobs addressed these dual threats in a widely shared eJewishPhilanthropy op-ed and at gatherings across North America, emphasizing that Zionism must remain rooted in justice and moral clarity.
  • Mobilized tens of thousands of Reform Jews to participate in the 2025 World Zionist Congress elections by launching the Vote Reform campaign — ensuring our values shape Israel’s future.
  • Held ongoing educational webinars, Shabbat gatherings, and solidarity events across the Reform Movement to keep our communities informed and connected, including nationwide events to mark 100 days since October 7, interfaith services, and camp-based education for teens around pluralism and Zionism.

Our work continues. We will not rest until every hostage is home, every community is safe, and Israel’s future reflects the values of peace, democracy, and equality that define our Reform Movement.
